Statement

This dataset is produced by the Brussels Institute for Statistics and Analysis (BISA) based on the methodology defined in Cahier de l’IBSA/Cahier van het BISA 17 (2026) on the Belgian urban structure.

The delineation of urban regions is based on a statistical method applied to data from the 2021 Census and to the municipal boundaries in force on 1 January 2025.

Urban regions are defined as the combination of the main urban pole (morphological agglomeration) and the suburban area (functional periphery). Each urban region is associated with a residential commuting zone.

The dataset results from the selection, harmonisation and processing of municipalities belonging to an urban region according to this methodology, with integration of the 2025 municipal boundaries.
